Think of all of those tall glass buildings; wouldn’t it be nice if all that incoming solar energy was harvested somehow?
Researchers at Michigan State University have created a fully transparent solar concentrator, which could turn any window or sheet of glass (like your smartphone’s screen) into a photovoltaic solar cell.
This is a feat that was once thought to be impossible, because traditional solar panels absorb light and turn it into energy, but a transparent surface is not typically able to absorb light.
The Michigan State researchers applied a somewhat different method for collecting sunlight. They used something called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator (TLSC).
The TLSC contains organic salts that absorb certain invisible light, which they glow as another invisible light's wavelength. That light is directed to plastic where standard solar cells convert it into electricity.
I really hope this can be mass produced and used everywhere...It is a fascinating idea and really promising for a future where green energy will be need it more!
