Letting go your companion in life must be devastating...but when you know from a personal experience what it is going to happen to him - pain, suffering and pretty unknown future - it is the right thing to do! Ben Moon had the most faithful companion anyone could ask for...his dog Denali! Their story goes back 14 years ago when they first met and since then they were inseparable...Until recently when Ben has to make a really tough decision...

This film, titled "Denali", celebrates a relationship that survived a nomadic lifestyle, a bout with cancer and—ultimately—death. It's a stunning and moving portrait, both emotional and stoic—and always related.
It was unexpected love at first sight when Ben first met Denali, but it was undeniable. After Ben and his girlfriend broke up, Ben left Portland, OR to begin living as a free-spirited nomad in the high deserts of Bend, OR. Denali went, too. In fact, he went everywhere with Ben. From hikes to beaches, the bonded duo traveled throughout the western United States. It was a life full of adventure, freedom, and joy.
In 2004, though, Ben was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. It was devastating news, but Moon survived, and throughout his surgery and treatment Denali was always by his side. Denali even climbed into the hospital bed with Ben. The dog’s healing power played a huge role in Ben’s recovery.
Denali had been a big part of Ben’s photography, even taking his rightful place on magazine covers throughout the years. In early 2014, Denali himself endured cancer, and Ben promised to never let him suffer. According to Ruffwear, he told him it was okay to let go. But after production began for the “Denali” film a week later — the very video you’re about to see — Ben asked Denali if he could stick around for another month.
Exactly one month later, at midnight, Denali developed a bad cough. Moon and Denali played on the beach the next day. The following morning he gave Ben the look — it was time to go.
Denali passed away at age 14 1/2 years old.
This extremely beautiful video is showing the friendship and love between a dog and his companion. How fortunate Denali was to have Ben in his life. From the first day and forward, Denali knew his purpose in life, and lived it out until his last breath!
Many of us have had to put equally devoted pets down when it was time for their suffering to come to an end. It’s never easy, and the loss lingers. As the saying goes, it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. I definitely lost it when I saw this!
