Ending up at a nursing home may sound like a nightmare for many people especially when we constantly hear in the news of mistreatment, mismanagement, and mishandling of patients at various homes around the country. Couple that with the looming sense of dread always in the air, and you have a negative atmosphere.
With more and more Americans facing retirement in the next 25 years, it's no wonder they're all hesitant to end up in a home.
However there’s a very special place in Seattle, Washington that has changed this looming sense with a brilliant project: by changing the way nursing homes and preschools operate by bringing the two together!
With the help of children, one Seattle hospital is trying to combat the loneliness that often accompanies aging.
At Mount St. Vincent, the Intergenerational Learning Center houses a nursing home and a preschool, where the children receive care and attention from the elderly, and the elderly feel a renewed sense of worth.
Luckily, this project is very real, and it's changing the way we look at nursing homes and educating our young minds for the better.
When people of diverse age groups are active together, they share experiences, learn from each other and help one another. This project sounds excellent and really promising...We can encourage different generations to be active together by finding out the common areas of interest between younger and older people, offering activities that respond to those interests, and planning activities so as many people as possible can participate!
