Washoe the chimpanzee was taken from the wild after her mother was killed. She was to be part of the space program for the United States, but instead Drs. Allen and Beatrix Gardner adopted her for their research. They raised her like a child to satisfy her need for companionship. She learned to how to brush her teeth, dress herself, and play games. The doctors taught Washoe to communicate using American Sign Language. She learned over 350 words and was the first chimpanzee to communicate in this way.
Most primates don't shed tears or show much in the way of outward emotion, which is what led so many to believe they simply had none. Thanks to Washoe's sign language skills, she was able to communicate her fears, sadness and happiness.
The following story proves it!
Others like Washoe have fared much worse. Some were released back into the wild only to be killed by humans, others were given over to medical research labs where they were injected with toxins and diseases on top of deplorable living conditions. We could all use an adjustment where this perspective is concerned.
Believe in animals and their skills and try to protect them...they own this planet as much as we do!
