Piotr (Peter) Naskrecki is a Polish-born entomologist, photographer and author, currently at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. As the kinds that he studies are katydids, a type of insect related to crickets, his investigations have to take place during the night.
So,A few years ago, while studying in Guyana, Naskrecki he followed a well-known procedure. However this time his investigation turned into a nightmare walk in the rainforest in Guyana, when he heard rustling as if something were creeping underfoot. When he turned on his flashlight, he expected to see a small mammal, such as a possum or a rat.
But it was something a lot creepier...
A moment later, he realized he was looking not at a brown, furry mammal, but an enormous, puppy-size spider.
Meet the South American Goliath bird-eating tarantula that has been going around... The South American Goliath birdeater may be the worst thing that exists: a spider so big you’d probably just want to hand it your wallet and run if you ever crossed paths with it.
The moniker “Goliath” is well-deserved, as it is considered to be the most massive species of spider on the planet.
The spider has a legspan up to 11 inches (28 centimeters) and a body about the size of an adult’s fist.
Known as the South American Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi), the colossal arachnid is the world's largest spider, according to Guinness World Records. Its leg span can reach up to a foot (30 centimeters), or about the size of "a child's forearm," with a body the size of "a large fist. The spider can weigh more than 6 oz. (170 grams).
Despite its name, the birdeater doesn't usually eat birds, although it is certainly capable of killing small mammals. The spider hunts in leaf litter on the ground at night, so the chances of it encountering a bird are very small. However, if it found a nest, it could easily kill the parents and the chicks!
The spider will eat frogs and insects, but its main prey is actually earthworms, which come out at night when it's humid.
I must admit that I admire this man’s passion and braveness…but I wouldn’t even go to a place like this! However due to such passionate people we are able to know Earth and its creatures better! Well done Mr. Naskrecki!
