Turkmenistan crater has been burning for more than 40 years. In 1971, Soviet geologists drilled into a cavern of natural gas near the Turkmen village of Derweze. The sinkhole though that created, reached 230 feet wide. To avoid gas drain scientists decided to burn it, expecting the fire to use up the fuel in a few days. However, even they thought to be an oil source, the crater has baffled scientists, as it has burned for more than 40 years after it was discovered.
These are the astonishing images of the very aptly named "Door to Hell" by the locals referring to the endless flames and boiling mud that can be found inside.
