Kanzi, a Male Bonobo, Learns How to Build a Fire and Toast Marshmallows

Kanzi (born October 28, 1980) is a male bonobo currently living in the United States at Georgia State University’s Language Research Center. On a recent episode of BBC’s Monkey Planet, we see Kanzi build a fire, light it using matches and proceed to toast marshmallows on it.
The bonobo (Pan paniscus) is a great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other is Pan troglodytes, or the common chimpanzee. Although the name “chimpanzee” is sometimes used to refer to both species together, it is usually understood as referring to the common chimpanzee, while Pan paniscus is usually referred to as the bonobo.
Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. The species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
