The Swedish Fire Torch, also known as a Canadian Candle, is a great way to set up a fire as it uses only one log, has a flat cooking surface and is self feeding, meaning it can burn for several hours without any attention.
This is the best campfire/camp stove/fire pit that I’ve ever seen. Ever! A Swedish log candle is a log that has had an eight pointed star cut down into it. When an accelerant is poured into the crevasses and lit, it becomes the most perfect outdoor heat source.
To make one you will need a chainsaw and a log. It’s like cutting a cake and we ALL know how to do that! (Yum. Cake.) Be sure that your log has a flat bottom or good luck with getting straight cuts and your chainsaw staying in one place. Getting the star cuts just right might take a little practice but I think it would be worth it. Can you imagine the stable cooking surface? It’s already dreaming of delicious camping recipes. And never has there been a more perfect stump (once it dies down a bit.)
The Swedish log candle is a relatively slow-burning fire, which goes through distinct stages that are well suited for different uses. When first lit it makes an excellent light source. Within half an hour, the flat, circular top is ideally suited for a kettle, skillet or billycan. After an hour, the log will emit considerable heat, and finally, as the log burns from the inside out, it creates a unique 360-degree natural oven for cooking kebabs of any sort.
They're not something you'd backpack with, but really work well. They're especially good in a backyard fire pt!
