When you think of someone performing surgery, you probably imagine doctors leaning over patients on an operating table. But what if those doctors couldn’t stand at all?
Dr. Ted Rummel is a celebrated surgeon, but there is something amiss with this doctor. When he operates on his patients, he is strapped upright to a cart. He looks like Hannibal Lecter, but he is still saving lives. The reason for the restraint isn’t because he isn’t trusted. It’s because he’s paralyzed and can’t stand on his own.
If you saw your doctor get wheeled in on a cart, you might lose some faith in him.
After all, how can someone who is paralyzed operate on another person?
Dr. Ted Rummel found a way to do it.
He was paralyzed in 2010, long after he became a surgeon.
He decided to still help people.
He operates while using a standing wheelchair.
His patients often rave about his genius, personality and bedside manner.
They don’t even mention that he is in a wheelchair.
He can perform surgeries on hands, elbows, feet, knees and ankles in his sitting wheelchair.
To operate on shoulders, he uses the standing chair. Don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t judge Dr. Rummel. He may be paralyzed, but he isn’t incompetent. In fact, it’s quite possible that his limitations allow him to focus on his career. He is an inspiration.
