They say money doesn’t grow on trees, but I’m willing to guess that “they” never saw these kinds of trees before. Look closely at these trunks. Do they look a little strange to you? They should. Thousands of strangers all over the UK have been working together to creating these “wishing trees,” by getting rid of some spare change.
These wishing trees are actually called money trees, as well.
That’s because there are thousands of coins literally hammered into the bark.
Passers by will, when they see a money tree, take out their spare change and wedge it into the tree.
Over time, it creates quite the stunning effect.
The old trees are now literally overflowing with both money and the silent wishes of strangers.
Most of the trees are located near Cumbria and Portmeirion, all within the UK.
According to the BBC, in the 1700s, the Scottish people would sometime hammer florins into a tree as an offering, hoping to take away sickness.
It’s unclear if that ever worked, but the tradition certainly remained.
It’s hard to say whether or not these money trees grant wishes (oh, I desperately hope), but they will forever remain awesome that people can randomly stumble across in the UK. Putting padlocks on bridges, tossing coins into wells and putting coins in trees… humans always find the most charming ways to express their desires.
